In a “initial response” to the death of a prominent leader, Lebanon’s Hezbollah said it had launched a massive rocket and drone attack on Israeli sites on Sunday, August 25, 2024, while Israel carried out what it called pre-emptive strikes against the organization.
Since the day following the beginning of Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza on October 7, there have been nearly daily gunfire exchanges over the Israel-Lebanon border.
Hezbollah has said that it is supporting the Iranian-backed Palestinian faction. Israel, the United Kingdom, and several other nations have outlawed both groups as terrorist organizations.
The health ministry in Lebanon has confirmed the deaths of over 560 individuals thus far, the great majority of them were Hezbollah members. Meanwhile, Israeli officials have reported the deaths of 23 soldiers and 26 civilians.
Nearly 200,000 people have reportedly been displaced on both sides of the border, according to the UN.
